Editorial policy
How we decide what to publish, and how you can check us.
Our sources
We write from primary sources: Acts of Parliament and statutory instruments on legislation.gov.uk, official government guidance on GOV.UK and gov.scot, and published determinations and guidance from the Housing Ombudsman Service. Where we rely on secondary sources such as the House of Commons Library or Shelter's professional resources, we say so and link to them.
Every substantive guide carries a sources list at the foot of the page. If a page makes a claim about the law that is not traceable to something in that list, that is a fault and we want to know about it.
What we will not publish
- Compensation estimates presented as what you will get. Awards depend entirely on the facts. Where we describe amounts, we describe published Ombudsman remedies guidance or reported cases, and we label them as such.
- Advice on your specific situation. We are not solicitors and we cannot advise you. We describe the general position and point you to people who can advise.
- Anything designed to get your details. We have no enquiry form, no eligibility checker and no callback request.
Accuracy and review
Every page shows the date it was last checked. Housing law is moving quickly at the moment, with Awaab's Law phasing in across 2025 to 2027, Scotland's separate rules starting in October 2026 and the Renters' Rights Act 2025 commencing in stages. We re-check pages affected by a change when that change happens, and we re-check everything else at least every six months.
We do not currently have a qualified housing solicitor or adviser reviewing our content before publication. We think it is more honest to say that than to imply a level of review we do not have. If that changes, this page will say so and the reviewer will be named.
Use of AI
We use AI tools to help with research and drafting. Every page is checked against primary sources and edited by a person before publication, and the editor named on each page takes responsibility for what it says.
Corrections
Email [email protected] with the page and the problem. If we have got something wrong we will correct it and note the correction on the page rather than quietly changing it.
Independence
We have no referral arrangements with solicitors or claims companies and receive no payment per enquiry. See how we are funded. If that position ever changes, it will be disclosed on that page and on every page affected, before you read the advice rather than after.
